Why superhero movies have had a no-good?
Superhero movies are having a bit of a tough time in 2023, and even before “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” hits the screens, it seems like it might face some challenges. The year kicked off on a shaky note with “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” not performing as expected back in February, signaling a surprising hiccup for Marvel. Things didn’t get better for DC either, as Warner Bros.’ adaptations like “The Flash” and “Blue Beetle” fell considerably short of the anticipated success, leaving behind more financial troubles than a speedster’s red streak. The real jaw-dropper, however, was in November when “The Marvels,” the sequel to the 2019 hit “Captain Marvel,” completely stumbled, making only $84 million at the North American box office, which is less than a fifth of its predecessor’s earnings and marks the first Marvel film to fall short of the $100 million mark domestically.
